Canadian provincial governments have begun looking into the benefits of having their own online casinos, in the fashion of several European countries. As it is, while only 2% of Canadian gamblers play casino games online, this comes to a total of about 400 million CAD a year going to online casino operators in other countries. The promise of being able to keep this money, or at least a portion of it, as a form of revenue for provincial governments has
motivated several to look into the online casino business for themselves. The first province to do so was British Columbia, and although there were some problems at first, the casino is now back up and operating, bringing in millions for the government coffers. Other provinces are following suit and Ontario, Canada’s most populace province, is set to have their casino up and running by 2012. In all provinces, the gambling will be under the control of the local lottery commissions. This is meant to aid in controlling the issue of problem gamblers. Overseas operators often have systems in place to prevent problem gamblers from playing, many of them are at least as strict of those proposed by government overseers. These are still voluntary though, and so there is a chance of a casino not having anything in place, and this is justifiably worrying to supports of the province run system.
